York Terrace

York Terrace

The extremely steep York Terrace, looking down towards Netherfield Road with the famous Victoria Settlement Community Centre on the right. Someone has removed a bollard, presumably to squeeze a car through in the days when they were few and far between. We hope the breaks were working properly.

Modern pictures like this of York Terrace, taken by Sylvia Morgan, highlight the stark difference between the modern Everton and the way it was. The large and imposing Our Lady Immaculate old school once stood on the left with grand houses near the top of York Terrace on the right. Now this is the only short cut from St Domingo Road down to Netherfield Road.

A more modern view down the very steep York Terrace with its dog leg onto what was the old Seville Street, he only way down now to Netherfield Road North. The giant Victoria Settlement community centre was once at the bottom of the old York Terrace on the right, now residential properties on that famous elevated platform which previous housed historic district villas.

The once very grand York Terrrace is beginning to show wear an tear by 1965,just before the clearances, but what a special residential area it must have once been. Pictured uploaded to Netherfield Road & SA Facebook.

The once grand York Terrace with its large Victorian Houses. The bollards on the left lead down to Hobart Street which linked York Terrace with Melbourne Street. The the door on the corner house seems to be floating in air without its once steep steps, below which were expansive cellars. This would have been a much sought after property along with its neighbours when it was built in the late 1800s. You can see from other images in this reel just how special York Terrace once was.

A great shot showing the bottom of the incredibly steep York Terrace towards Netherfield Road with the wall of the old Victoria Settlement to the right.

The pictures of York Place were probably taken after the Second World War. In the middle of the street, there used to be a brick built air-raid shelter. Following the war, it remained for a while as a smelly, foul construction with the entrance littered with broken glass until it was demolished. I still have a scar on my wrist after falling in that entrance and making friends with a piece of glass.

A classic image of York Terrace looking down the hill towards Netherfield Road. The Victoria Settlement community centre was at the bottom on the right in its elevated position, once amongst the very first former Everton villas. What I really love about this picture is how it captures a time and place in the 1950/1960s when mums would be out chatting by their doorsteps with youngsters playing in the street. The bollards on the right led down to Hobart Street which, in turn, stretched down to Melbourne Street where I was brought up as a kid.

The corner of York Terrace and Netherfield Road now, very different from those days up to the 1960s when the Victoria Settlement community centre dominated the elevated site.

The 1906 picture from the top of York Terrace (below) is a great memory jerker for me. My family lived in the adjacent Melbourne Street, not quite as grand. Just look at the ironwork around those front doors on the left. York Terrace must have been very special. Anne Sharp lived in York Terrace, the great friend and confidante of famous author Jane Austen. Anne would run a school on Everton Terrace. She was buried in the St George's churchyard.
