Devonshire Place

Devonshire Place
  1. Ken Rogers says:
Sorry John. I lived close to Devonshire Place, but this was the first I have heard of Thomas Peter Bethell. Fascinating story.
  2. John Coathup says:
In the late 19th century Thomas Peter Bethell a Liverpool box maker turned camera maker lived at number 33 Devonshire Place. His work premises began in South John Street and ended up in Boundary street. One of his cameras is credited with being the first camera ever world wide as being the first to captue a felon by use of photography. I can find no map detailed enough to identify number 33 but would hope that you might know of such. Liverpool is the home of the first world wide photographic journal beginning in 1856 and still surviving today. Iam currently compiling the history of ALL THE Liverpool camera makers in the early days of Photography. Any help would be appreciated.

My g g grandparents lived in the bottom house on the left corner of Netherfield Road, the Peak family. I would love to find a photo of that large house. My great grandparents lived in Patmos Street just behind John Butler's house, again the Peak family, later Edward Peak's home. My father lived in Albion Street, 39, the Fletcher family. My dad was Reg, someone I think you met Ken at St George's. I knew the area very well as a youngster even though I lived in Kirkdale. I had lots of friends there, Bobby and Fred next to the Peaks, Silvia Osborn Paul Kennedy and many more. Also lots of family in the area.

Yes, Gary. Definitely a chippy on the corner of the last block down Netherfield Road North to the Valley. I was often sent there by my parents for four penth of chips!

Hi, My Grandma and Grandad lived in No 11b Devonshire Place. I stayed with them every weekend as a child for many years. I went shopping with my Grandma every Saturday morning to Great Homer Street and pushed an old pram with her shopping in along GHS and up Devonshire Place. I think that pushing of the pram along GHS and up Devonshire Place for all those years helped me join the Army (Parachute Regiment), through being fit as a butchers dog, that pram was heavy. I was given 5 shilling pocket money and with that I bought 2 x 2 shilling saving stamps at the post office at the bottom of Netherfield Road / Walton Road, 6 pence was put into a toy club in GHS for Christmas, and the remaining 6 pence was spent on sweets. Can you tell me if there was a chippy on that row of shops running down to Everton Valley, I remember going for chips and such all the time, Cheers, Gary.

Devonshire Place ran between Netherfield Road North and St Domingo Road. At its top end was a small, but busy little park with swings and a Top Hat roundabout. Please leave a picture of Devonshire Place if you have one or simple leave a street memory.
