From Mary Thornton, a great memory: Great Nelson street with the Wesleyan in the background (later to become the Rydel Centre). Mary recalls: I remember when those streets were flooded in 1959 and us kids were all swimming there until some one saw a rat and we all scattered!

The Houghton Arms stood on the corner of Great Nelson Street and Great Homer Street near the original open air market.
