Lytton Street

doing my dads life story he's deceased now Oct 2025 it says Saturday morning’s job was to take the accumulator to the chandler’s shop down the lane, to get it charged up, so as my brothers could listen to the radio without it running out of power, then I was allowed to go with my mates to either the Cory cinema if I had any pocket money or the Lytton flea pit in Mere Lane where they accepted jam jars, 4 jars and you got to sit at the front where my neck was held right back so as I could see. My Mum used to wonder where the jam disappeared.

Lytton Street Cinema - owned by the Dolan family about 1920 to being demolished, was used in 60's as storage and as Bright Furniture Company briefly.

Lytton Street's south side, showing a little bit of the Lytton Cinema, often referred to locally as the 'Lousy Lytton', linked with its deteriorating condition rather than the quality of its films! This old picture house was built in 1911 and closed in 1959. It was originally called Prince's Picture Palace; then Prince's Picturedrome; then Prince's Picture Hall and finally the Lytton Cinema as it continually tried to re-invent itself, always faced with strong competition from the nearby classic venue that was the Royal Hippodrome. The Lytton, the smallest of Liverpool's independent venues, could still seat 580 people in its own right and did well to last as long as it did.
