Poyntz Street

  1. Ken Rogers says:
This anchor on the corner of Kirkdale Road and Great Homer Street actually marks the site of the former Poyntz Street. The anchor belonged to the SS Malakand that exploded during the Second World War, sending fragments into the nearby streets. It happened on the night of the 3rd May 1941 during a bombing raid. The SS Malakind was berthed In Huskisson Dock. Built in 1919 she was part of the Brocklebank Shipping line. Flames from dock sheds that had been bombed spread to the Malakand and the fire services were unable to contain the fire. A few hours after bombing raid had ended, the ship finally exploded
