Stitt Street

I spent my early years living in Stitt St. We lived near Everton Brow end , not sure of the number but it was 100 and something. I do know we lived next door to Katie Burke and her family, I remember her really well, she was a lovely woman. My Ninny Owen lived in page st then later moved to Queen Ann Place in the squares in Soho St. I'm 70 now but remember my years there really well, it was a great community. My parents were Alec and Betty Owen. Our favourite haunt was Shaw St Park, dozens of us kids would be there all day playing together,. Such a shame that the houses couldn't be renovated. A lovely community was decimated.

My Madican/ Madigan / Bell ( same Family) all lived at 83, 88, 114, 122, and 124 Stitt Street after coming over from Castlebar County Mayo Ireland. My Great Grandfather Martin Madican 1866-1935 who married Mary Ellen Stanton lived at No-88, His Brother Patrick Madican who Married Mary Ellen Kelly lived at No's-114, 122 and 124 whilst their Sister Catherine Madican who married John Bell and they lived at No- 83.. They moved into Stitt Street in the late 1890's and Patrick Madican was the last one to live there as he died in 1949. Patrick was known around the area as the Vet as he often helped repair the neighbour's injured animals because of his farming background back in County Mayo Ireland. When he was widowed to his first Wife Mary Ellen Kelly he remarried his neighbour Winifred Riley ( nee Gogarty) in 1931 but they lived separately in 112 and 114 Stitt Street respectively all through their married life. My own Grandfather Thomas Madigan 1911 -1979 was also born in 86 Stitt Street.

I lived in top Haigh Street by the church, the picture shows Mrs Smith outside her and her daughters shop, I remember buying a packet of 5 Woodbine cigs, a 7 O'Clock razor blade and what we called a tin loaf, which I used to eat the corners off and blame the mice in Mrs Smiths shop

Stitt Street. My grandmother Mary Ellen Kelly lived at 91. It’s believed that she was one of the last to leave before Stitt Street disappeared from the Electoral Register sometime between October 1961 and October 1962. Her picture was in the Echo or Catholic Pictorial as a woman who would not be moved! Any ideas on the date the last occupants were moved out please?

Stitt Street was between Haigh Street and Salisbury Street, close to the famous St Francis Xavier's Church. Stitt Street was off Langsdale Street. If you have a picture of Stitt Street please upload here and/or leave a comment/ memory about Stitt Street.
